Strengthening a Partnership Built in Kenya Since 2012

How SNI and Family Care Missions collaborate to support children and families in Mombasa

In the summer of 2025, members of the Sponsorship Network Intl. team traveled to Mombasa, Kenya, to visit long-standing partner projects supported through Family Care Missions (FCM). This visit marked an important moment in a partnership that began in 2012 — not only to reconnect in person, but to personally ensure that the sponsored funds are reaching the children and families they were intended to support.

For SNI, on-the-ground visits are an essential part of responsible sponsorship. Being present allows us to listen, observe, and confirm that local initiatives align with shared goals of dignity, transparency, and long-term impact.

Seeing impact firsthand

During the summer visit, the SNI team spent time at the Olives Rehabilitation Center in Bombolulu, an education center serving children from nearby informal settlements, as well as engaging with the wider Family Care Missions team. These conversations and observations helped reaffirm that support was being used effectively — and just as importantly, that local teams were responding thoughtfully to real needs on the ground.

The visit also highlighted areas where facilities and resources were under increasing strain due to rising living costs, aging infrastructure, and growing demand for basic services such as school meals.

Continued impact through local leadership

Following the SNI team’s visit, the local Family Care Missions team continued implementing project activities throughout October 2025, using SNI’s support to address the most urgent needs identified earlier in the year.

This included targeted improvements at two education centers:

  • The Olives Rehabilitation Center, which currently provides basic education to around 80 children from the Bombolulu area

  • Coast Green Garden Nursery School, a newer initiative in a rural village near Mtwapa, serving approximately 75 young children from low-income families

At the Olives Center, urgent repairs were carried out — including kitchen restructuring, replacement of termite-damaged poles and benches, new roofing sheets, and repainting of classrooms. New desks, chairs, and blackboards helped improve learning conditions, while the school lunch program received support during a period of heightened food insecurity.

At Coast Green Garden Nursery School, SNI’s contribution enabled the construction of three toilets, installation of a 1,000-liter water tank, provision of classroom furniture, and supplies for school lunches — ensuring a safe and dignified environment for young learners.

Supporting families beyond the classroom

Recognizing that education is deeply connected to household stability, the local team also distributed food care packages to 150 of the most vulnerable families in surrounding communities. Many of these families are affected by serious illness or unemployment and have been hit hard by inflation and rising fuel costs.

In addition, SNI’s support contributed to modest stipends for 13 low-income teachers and staff, helping schools retain experienced educators during a challenging economic period.

Why this approach matters

What makes this partnership effective is the balance between personal oversight and local leadership. The SNI team’s visit in summer 2025 ensured accountability and alignment, while the continued work by Family Care Missions demonstrated the strength and reliability of locally led implementation.

Over the years, students from the Olives Center have gone on to secondary education, vocational training, and employment — a reminder that sustained support, combined with trust in local partners, creates pathways that last well beyond a single project cycle.

Looking ahead

As Family Care Missions approaches its 30th year of service in Kenya, SNI remains committed to supporting initiatives that respond to real needs with care, integrity, and long-term vision.

DRC – The Next Chapter

Hello everyone, this is Michel Steiner, checking in from my latest visit to the Bana Mayele Educational Centre in Kinshasa, Congo.

This being my fourth visit to Kinshasa, the sights, sounds, and smells of Congo were now familiar to me. At last, after a 22-hour trip from Zurich, the gates of the compound were open before us and the first glace into the central yard was a pleasant contrast from the poverty, dirt and confusion that was part of the reality for the 16 million inhabitants that surrounded us. The various quarters of the facility, all lighted in the midnight sky with garden lamps giving it an almost surreal atmosphere.

First impressions

Morning Excitement

The next morning after coffee the excitement mounted as we toured the grounds to see what changes had taken place since our last visit. The dining hall and kitchen showed the most striking transformation from just a year ago.

Transformations at Bana Mayele

Fully outfitted, decorated and able to cater to up to 300 guests, capable of hosting occasional weddings and funerals as a potential self-sustainment and vocational training possibility for the young inhabitants of the Centre the final piece of the operational infrastructure was in place. From now on the focus could be transitioned to education, expansion and further development and improvement of the program.

Team Dynamics

My assignment was unique this year – film director. I embarked on a new challenge to my already broad spectrum of responsibilities as the Founder and Director of SNI; that being, to help present Bana Mayele to the world. With camera and microphone in hand, a dedicated team member and I set out to showcase the realities of central Africa to those who have never experienced this part of the world.

The Power of Volunteering

My travel companion, Joachim from Germany, a former professional sports car racer, mechanical engineer, electrician and general all-rounder, jumped straight into any task that he could find needed improvement to keep his active mind productive. After checking the water tanks, inspecting the pump system, he turned his capabilities to the two vehicles used daily. Clearly, he was in his element, as a volunteer he brought his most valuable assets to Congo, know-how and initiative.

High Gear Operations

By the second day, our full team had arrived and our operation moved into high gear. With volunteers taking on roles such as sports trainers holding activities and games, teachers passing on the basics of English while learning from the kids the local language themselves, medics to help the doctors on site and a wide variety of other responsibilities, each individual was in good spirits, ready to help tackle new challenges every day at Bana Mayele.

Reflecting on the Journey

As I reflect on this incredible journey, I’m filled with gratitude for the dedicated team, our local Project Manager Madlen, and volunteers who bring their skills, passion, and heart to Bana Mayele. Each visit renews my commitment to this mission and strengthens my resolve to continue expanding our reach.

Looking to the Future

Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of these children, offering them not just a place to learn, but a place to thrive. As we look to the future, our goal remains clear: to provide even more children with the opportunities they deserve, and to nurture their potential in an environment where they can truly flourish.

SNI supports Turkey with aid packages

Sponsorship Network International remains steadfast in our commitment to providing aid to Syrian refugee families who have endured the devastating effects of war. The impact of conflict has left many families displaced and struggling, particularly in neighboring countries like Turkey, where the refugee crisis has had a profound effect.

In addition to supporting Syrian refugees, we continue to aid the people of Turkey following the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that left millions dispossessed. The earthquake has compounded the challenges faced by communities already grappling with the effects of vulnerability, scarcity and instability. Our efforts include distributing food boxes and traditional Ramadan staples, aiming to alleviate food insecurity and provide comfort to those in need.

We’re proud to collaborate with Safe Haven for Refugees – Anything for a Smile, our local partner NGO, providing medical homes for child cancer patients from war-torn Syria. These homes offer vital medical care and support services, serving as a beacon of hope for children and families facing unimaginable challenges.

As we reflect on the values of compassion and solidarity, we’re reminded of the urgent need to stand with those who have been affected by conflict, displacement, and natural disasters. By coming together and offering our support, we are providing relief and hope, helping rebuild lives and creating a brighter future. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our supporters and partners who make this work possible.

Bringing Hope to Uganda: Our Recent Quest

We’re thrilled to share the impact of our recent journey to Uganda, where we brought hope and assistance to those in need. Our mission took us to the capital, Kampala and to the Fort Portal region near the East Congo border. We encountered both the breathtaking landscapes and the pressing challenges faced by local communities.

Uganda is home to some of the largest refugee populations globally, a stark reminder of the ongoing conflicts that have plagued the region for decades. Most refugees come from South Sudan (57%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (32%), Somalia (3%), and Burundi (3%), all in search of safety and stability.

Despite these challenges, our team with ‘Anything for a Smile’ – the partnering NGO and other local organizations and volunteers, – made a meaningful impact. We conducted hospital visits, providing essential medical care and health education to those in need. Additionally, we brightened pediatric wards with vibrant mural paintings, bringing joy and comfort to young patients and their families in their time of need.

Our efforts extended beyond healthcare, as we also visited rural schools to provide educational support and resources to underserved children. These visits were particularly poignant as we witnessed firsthand the resilience and determination of young students and teachers in the face of poor conditions and adversity.

Our collaboration with the medical team was instrumental in ensuring our efforts reached remote villages and underserved populations, reflecting our commitment to leaving no one behind.

As we reflect on our journey, we recognize that the need for ongoing support within Africa , as well as in Uganda is imminent. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who supported us and urge continued solidarity in our shared mission of compassion and service.

Stay tuned for more updates on our efforts and how you can get involved in bringing hope to communities in Africa!
